Video Summary
The webinar, led by Jennifer LeBay from APACEN, focused on the 2024 updates to ICD-10-CM coding guidelines and code changes effective October 1, 2024 (Fiscal Year 2025). Key topics included understanding new and revised codes, guidelines for precise diagnosis coding, resources, and implications for skilled nursing facility billing and assessments.

Major updates highlighted were additions of pre-symptomatic Type 1 diabetes codes (E10.A series), new in remission and non-remission codes for various cancers especially lymphomas, and expanded obesity classification codes based on BMI with obesity class codes (E66.81x). New hypoglycemia levels with specific coding instructions and genetic codes for epilepsy and obesity were introduced. Additional updates included expanded codes for fistulas, pruritus types, select autoimmune and pulmonary embolism variations, and more detailed categories in eating disorders and cognitive deficits like anosognosia.

The importance of physician documentation and queries was emphasized repeatedly, as coding must be supported by clear clinical documentation and cannot be inferred from non-physician notes alone. Regular ICD-10 code reviews and updates for accuracy, especially around obsolete or updated codes, were encouraged. Guidance was given on ensuring correct use of codes in electronic records, therapy documentation, and billing processes including PDPM mapping file updates.

A substantial Q&A session addressed practical coding scenarios, including use of muscle wasting codes post-infection, BMI coding with dietitian documentation, obesity classification, sepsis coding, and query examples. Jen stressed collaboration with medical directors and physicians to clarify diagnoses ensuring correct coding and skilled care justification. The session concluded with encouragement to download updated manuals and mapping files, use provided CMS resources, and consistently query to retain coding precision and compliance with 2024 ICD-10 changes.
